How to start practicing Yoga

Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline, originating in ancient India. The goal of yoga, or of the person practicing yoga, is the attainment of a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility while meditating on the Hindu concept of divinity.

I came to practice yoga as a means to deal with low back pain starting in 2005. Almost everyone will experience low back pain at some point in their lives and I started to experience when I was 39. A common cause of low back pain is lumbar spinal stenosis and that’s what I have.  As we age, our spines change. These normal wear-and-tear effects of aging can lead to narrowing of the spinal canal. This condition is called spinal stenosis.

The pain began to become more regular in 2004 and acute and I went to my physician and he told me that it was going to be something I’d have to live with. He did refer me to a pain clinic and i did experience 3 spinal injections of cortisone which kept my back pain free for a month at a time. But there’s a limit to how much of that a body can take and I had to turn to something else. I did a bit of research on low back pain and eventually came across some very informative yoga sites. So starting in 2005 I began to practice yoga and I haven’t stopped.

I have always been a physical exercise person. You know no pain no gain. I pick things up and I put them down. That’s the way I was trained for high school football, wrestling and the US army but through yoga i learned that physical pain did not necessarily result in good health. Have a good clean and clear mind leads to good health. I still lift weights and ride my bike every day, I walk the dog and play sports with the kids but yoga has added a new dimension to how to be health and strong.

The sun salutation is the easiest way to get started with yoga. If you can Try to get out in the Sun. It is vital for our health to get 20 minutes of Sun per day. A good time to do this is when the Sun is rising. I have done this many times and there are few things greater than welcoming the sun with good vibrations and good yoga. Let the rays of the Sun melt into your pores. This dynamic Sun series is always synchronized with conscious breathing. Imagine how a tiger wakes up with the Sun and stretches its entire body with intensity and agility, yet is quiet with the knowledge of its own power. It is important to remain conscious of increased energy to all parts of your body. With each inhalation, you will feel that your body is being filled from the tailbone up into the rib cage and into both lungs—with crystal-like energy.

That’s it for today now go and look at the show notes and consider a short yoga practice in your daily routine for a better life.
