Episode-123- Get More Food With Fall Gardening

This fall I am growing Kale, sweet potatoes, daikon radish, chinese cabbage, broccoli, garlic, and French red shallots. I bought the sweet potato slips, kale, cabbage and broccoli from

the home store, the garlic and shallots will come in September from SESE. The cover crops that also come from SESE will be sowed in October or as the gardens die then they’ll be sown again in the early spring. The hairy vetch and clover may have a chance to bloom before any frost puts them to sleep and this will help the honey bee hives I have store up some extra nectar and pollen before the winter clusters form. The cover crops also serve to provide nutrients such as nitrogen to the soil. I’ll also mulch up all of the leaves that will soon be falling and put them on the gardens to add more nutrients and improve drainage. Most of the gardens were built hugelkultur style and going into next year the buried wood will continue to break down and add even more life to the gardens.

Don’t miss out eating fresh salad this fall from your own garden versus eating lettuce shipped from across the country or some other part of the world.
