Episode-249- Food Forest And Permaculture Showcase Part 2/4

Here is part 2 of the food forest videos. This video shows how the swales that I built in the backyard have matured to the point where they now support hundreds of plants. That is no exageration and the goal is to have them eventually fill out with the fruti producing bsushes such as Juneberry, Goji and Goumi. I’ll ad to those over time too.

The video was taken before the battle with Japanese beetles on the grape and kiwi vines got underway so they look a little better in the video than they do now. However, a lot of the other plants have grown immensely. One of the things I have learned is that if you provide support they will grow tall. Hence the tomatoes near the shed are now fast approaching 5 feet as trellis support has been added since this video was taken.

Another note of interest is how well the interconnected systems seem to fit together whether they are swales or hugel mounds. The variety of plants and the growth they are experiencing give great contrast to what the yard used to be like. it really is true that the most excitement in life happens at the edges.

Permaculutre Principle 11

Use edges and value the marginal: The interface between things is where the most interesting events take place. These are often the most valuable, diverse and productive elements in the system.
