I’ve wanted grow mushrooms for sometime but never really researched the idea until recently. I came across a wonder grilled shitake recipe the other day and if I can get the shitake to grow I will not stop. A review of the Raintree Nursery catalog revealed an enticing offer for growing shiitake and oyester mushroom but they were too pricey. Then I found Oyster Creek Mushrooms which had mushroom dowels for sale at half the price of Raintree. I soon learned that the wood logs I have recently cut in the back would be perfect for growing mushrooms and then I remembered an episode from Jason Aikers the self sufficient gardener in which he demonstrated the ease of growing mushrooms.

My father tried the mushroom thing years ago and ended up with nada. I think he used poplar logs but there was likely some oak in the mix too. Drill, pound, wax is really familiar, but for whatever reason his eventually turned into humus.
seems like i need to run my querky ideas past your father first next time. have had some minor flourish success so far but waiting til spring or next fall to declare failure. at least i held off on trying to do more this past fall. next up…mason bees, more honey bees and lots more fruit
